August - October 2023. Our Ruston 48DS shunter developed an odd noise in July 2023 which turned out to be a gearbox fault in the forward/reverse bevel gears.

Over a period of many weeks to the gearbox was removed from the engine and dismantled. It was found that a bearing had overheated and welded itself to the shaft. The shaft was skimmed and new bearing and collar had to be made.

Half the gearbox on the trolley.

The drive on the Ruston is via chains which were removed for the repair.

Pushed to the pit for the chains to be reinstated.

Working again.
