August - October 2023. Our Ruston 48DS shunter developed an odd noise in July 2023 which turned out to be a gearbox fault in the forward/reverse bevel gears. Over a period of many weeks to the gearbox was removed from the engine and dismantled. It was found that a bearing had overheated and welded itself to the shaft. The shaft was skimmed and new bearing and collar had to be made. |
Half the gearbox on the trolley. |

The drive on the Ruston is via chains which were removed for the repair. |
Pushed to the pit for the chains to be reinstated. |
Working again. |
