Every 14 months, maximum, Pectin must be examined and passed fit by the Insurance Company's assessor. This involves some dismantling, much cleaning and a two stage inspection.

The first is a cold exam when the firebox and boiler are closely inspected to check for cracks, wastage etc and measurements taken of the various thicknesses for comparison with previous years. The engine is then put back together and a further check is made to see that all is well and that the safety valves work as designed.

The cold exam has been passed and with everything apart from the dome replaced, Pectin is fired up.

Pressure reaches 160lb.

Safety valves are tested and any required adjustments noted before the assessor calls again.
