New Release August 2011. A remarkable collection of railway films, covering many long lost scenes in Somerset, Dorset and neighbouring counties from the early 1940s to the mid 1960s and shot on a 16mm camera has been released on a new 90 minute DVD. One section on the Locomotive Exchanges in 1948 is in Black and White with the remainder all in colour. The films were taken by Douglas Seaton and carefully preserved by his son, Clive who has kindly shown them to Railway and other local organisations. However they have not been generally released before. This DVD covers a crucial part in railway history with Douglas filming many sequences during the time of Nationalisation of the railways including the Southern, GWR, BR experimental blue and other liveries carried during the changeover period. Among the highlights are scenes at Yeovil Town, Pen Mill and Junction, Royal trains around Yeovil in 1952/3, Castles and Kings on the West of England line, slip coaches at Westbury, the Weymouth Quay line, Castles to Weymouth including banking at Yetminster, Adams Radial tanks at Axminster and a Star class at Devizes. To celebrate the launch of the DVD, Clive Seaton and Roger Hardingham of Kingfisher Productions met at Yeovil Railway Centre recently during the visit of the country’s newest steam locomotive, 60163 ‘Tornado’, completed in 2008. The DVD (cost £19.95) is available from Yeovil Railway Centre’ shop (open Sunday mornings 10am to noon), to order via the Centre’s website + £1 Postage and Packing or by writing to Yeovil Railway Centre, Yeovil Junction Station, Stoford, YEOVIL, Somerset BA22 9UU enclosing a cheque for £20.95 to include Postage and Packing.
