Dorset has many attractions including the World Heritage coastline, also beaches and the South West Coastal Path. Sherborne town, Abbey and Sherborne Castle (see English Heritage for Sherborne Old Castle) are well worth checking out.

The National Trust owns many fine houses, gardens and land throughout the area. Check in particular the entries for Montacute House (of Sense and Sensibility fame), Stourhead Gardens, Lytes Cary (an enchanting manor house) and Corfe Castle (just by the Swanage Railway).
English Heritage owns Sherborne (Old) Castle.

West Somerset Railway runs from Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) to Minehead in West Somerset.
East Somerset Railway runs in the countryside from Cranmore.
Gartell Railway is narrow gauge running on part of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway south of Templecombe. Limited opening.
Seaton Tramway operates over the old Seaton Branch line. Both open and closed trams with views across the river make this different.
