STEAM COURSES WITH "PECTIN" (Returned to service 2022)
Pectin is an 0-4-0ST built by Peckett's of Bristol in 1921. It spent most of it's working life on the site of British Aluminium at Burnisland, Fife in Scotland. The loco was purchased by 6000 Locomotive Association, in 1971 and moved to their base in Hereford at Bulmer's Cider, where it acquired the name "Pectin". It came to Yeovil Junction in 1995 on loan and has been a firm favourite with all concerned ever since. On 2 July 2006 the engine was donated to Yeovil Railway Centre as the 6000 Locomotive Association was to be wound up.
STEAM COURSES WITH 'LORD FISHER' (now withdrawn, 2022, for a 10 yearly overhaul)
‘Lord Fisher’ (an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0) worked at military establishments in the south east until being purchased by the Gas Board around 1950. It ended up dumped at Hilsea Gasworks in about 1960 when it was purchased and fully overhauled by the Chapel Tramway in Southampton, an industrial line near to the docks. This line closed in 1967 and in the same year 'Lord Fisher', still in working order, was bought by a small group and went first to Longmoor, then to Radstock and finally in 1973 to Cranmore. By this time Barry Buckfield was the sole owner. During the early years of the East Somerset Railway, it was the mainstay, operating brakevan trips and being available for shunting. It was still being used for most shunting up to around 1997 when small diesel shunters were introduced at the East Somerset Railway, which took over most this work.
Moved to Yeovil Railway Centre on a 10 year loan and put into service June 2013.
WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Two options!
a) One/two person/s can join the loco crew at the beginning of one of our regular Train Days (run from March to September), help prepare the loco and then enjoy a spell on the footplate (including driving the engine under instruction) before the site opens to the public! Cost £144.00 (inc VAT) per person.
or
b) If you need a quote for a larger group etc for a longer Driver Experience involving a variety of roles, please get in touch.
For our Driver Experience/Train Crew events you will need to be a minimum of 18 years old, medically able and reasonably fit as some climbing onto engines will be involved.
